The Induction Motor (1883)

Electrical/Electronic inventions that changed the world

The Induction Motor (1883)

Nikola Tesla – (1856 – 1943)

The alternating current ‘induction motor’, can be considered as one of the most important inventions in history, and was invented and developed by Nikola Tesla who was born in 1856 in Smiljan, Croatia. During his lifetime Tesla would file almost 300 patents including wireless communication, alternating current and the induction motor. Many of the inventions of Nikola Tesla would over time come to revolutionise our world.

Michael Faraday had demonstrated an electric motor in 1821 and Zénobe Gramme went on to invent the modern direct current motor in 1873. However, Tesla built the first working induction motor in 1883 and given continued development, our household appliances rely upon the use of Tesla’s motor in everyday life.

The induction motor works using alternating current rather than direct current. It has a simple design and is significantly less expensive to manufacture than direct current motors. It’s also has fewer parts to wear out and is thus more reliable.

The induction motor is also used extensively in industrial environments to power machine tools, conveyor belts and a variety of other applications. Generally, induction motors rotate at fixed rotational speeds relative to the frequency of the alternating current supply, hence the use of gear boxes are required for other none frequency related speeds.

Importantly, and fundamentally due to the inventions of Nikola Tesla, we have electricity in our homes and the means to convert this electricity to useful work.
